Early Life and Career
When he was 16 years old, Johnny Depp abandoned his high school education to pursue music. Along with his band, The Kids, he moved from Florida, where he spent most of his youth, to Los Angeles. In 1983, Depp tied the knot with Lori Anne Allison, who worked as a makeup artist, while he struggled to establish himself as a musician. Allison enlisted her friend, actor Nicolas Cage, to help Depp secure an audition with director Wes Craven, which led to Depp’s cinematic debut in A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), where he played a teenager consumed by his bed. However, Depp and Allison separated in the following year.
Music and Personal Life
Johnny Depp’s passion for music persisted, and he showcased his skills as an acoustic guitarist in the film Chocolat (2000) and on the soundtrack for Once upon a Time in Mexico (2003). In addition, Depp contributed his guitar talents to albums by Oasis and the Pogues. While filming The Ninth Gate, he met French actress and singer Vanessa Paradis, with whom he had a long-term relationship (1998-2012) and two children.

Depp married actress Amber Heard in 2015, and their tumultuous marriage became the subject of tabloid headlines. Heard publicly accused him of physical assault and substance abuse issues. They divorced in 2016, and in 2018, Heard wrote an op-ed for The Washington Post in which she claimed to be a “public figure representing domestic abuse.” Also that year, The Sun, a British newspaper, referred to Depp as a “wife beater.” Depp sued the paper for libel, and in 2020, a judge ruled against Depp, citing that he had put Heard in fear of her life. During this period, Depp also sued Heard for defamation over her article in The Post. She countersued, alleging that Depp had defamed her when one of his attorneys called her abuse claims a hoax. The trial, which was televised and received widespread media attention, began in April 2022. After six weeks of testimony, a jury ruled in favor of Depp, awarding him $15 million in compensatory and punitive damages. However, the judge later reduced the amount to $10.35 million. The jury also found that Depp’s attorney had defamed Heard, and she was awarded $2 million in compensatory damages. While both parties accused each other of domestic abuse during the trial, Heard did not prevail on two other counts. The trial was particularly popular on social media and was described as a media circus.
Controversies
• Depp faced criticism from the Native American community in 2002 after he claimed to have Native American ancestry without providing any evidence to support his claim.
• In a 2003 interview with a German magazine, Depp made a statement that was controversial and critical of America, calling it “dumb”.
• Depp was accused of illegally bringing his dogs to Australia in 2015.
• The Depp-Heard trial began after Amber Heard filed for divorce from Depp in May 2016 and accused him of verbal and physical abuse in her court declaration, leading to a temporary restraining order against him. Depp denied the allegations and accused Heard of seeking a premature financial resolution. They reached a settlement in August 2016 and finalized their divorce in January 2017, with Heard receiving a settlement of US$7 million, which she pledged to donate to the ACLU and CHLA. In February 2019, Depp sued Heard for defamation over an op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post in December 2018. Heard countersued Depp in August 2020, accusing him of conspiring against her to get her fired from Aquaman and L’Oreal. The Depp-Heard trial took place in Fairfax County, Virginia from April 11 to June 1, 2022, and the jury found that all three statements in Heard’s op-ed were false and made with the intent to defame Depp. The jury awarded Depp $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages from Heard. Depp expressed his gratitude for the verdict, saying that the jury had given him his life back.
